This Is Just To Say

By William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold.

Analysis: This poem is purposely short and simplistic. It lends to the mystery of the poem even though its length alludes to simplicity as does the topic, it has a complex tone and meaning.  Its lack of punctuation leads the reader to believe it was written in a hurry, maybe as a note left on the kitchen table. The overall tone encompasses a guilty but satisfied feeling because the plums were so delicious, which is quite impressive considering the poem is only 33 words long. That includes the title which doubles as the first line.
